Kara Maloney, Artist Bio

Kara Maloney is a rural advocate, artist, and community leader. She grew up in Minneapolis and has made Lanesboro (pop.715) home. She works as the Executive Director for Lanesboro Arts, a multidisciplinary arts non-profit in Lanesboro, MN.

In her own artistic practice, Kara draws inspiration from Scandinavian rosemaling, and has a penchant for painting, printmaking, and collage. “Rosemaling has always been a part of my life, my grandparents were Norwegian and spoke Norwegian. Their house was decorated with rosemaled items that influenced my mother to become a rosemaler. When I was growing up I watched her rosemal,” Kara shared.

Kara graduated from Luther College with Art and Management degrees. Throughout her time at Luther, she noticed her art reflected that Scandinavian influence. She took various studio classes ranging from sculpture, printmaking, drawing, etc. Kara was interested in the intersection of the mediums which led her down a path exploring mixed media.

In the past few years, Kara has attended classes at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Folk Art School. The classes introduced her to the fine art skills and history of rosemaling. Now after taking classes, Kara is interested in continuing to explore traditional rosemaling techniques as well as push the boundaries of the art form with a contemporary flare. She does this through using bright colors and a variety of media such as collage, chalk colored pencils, acrylic paint, and charcoal.
