Neil Bechtold, Artist Bio
My work explores how color, line, and texture shape our perception of the world around us. I feel that we continually walk through and inhabit a maze of manmade and natural elements, and my work explores that dichotomy in its simplest distillation. Whether I’m working on paper or on canvas, each piece begins with a fluid, intuitive layer—watercolor or acrylic—that sets the underlying emotional tone. I then build on this foundation with many built-up elements (depending on substrate type) allowing the marks and shapes to interact in ways that reveal and obscure form at the same time.
Sometimes, I occasionally introduce small collage elements as quiet disruptions, inviting the viewer to question what feels continuous or certain. These moments remind me—and hopefully the viewer—that perception is layered and never fixed.
At its core, my practice is an exploration of ambiguity. I aim to create spaces where the viewer can slow down, look closely, and find meaning in the synthesis of the outwardly real and the internally created. A case study in art imitating life.
